The Revolutionists
For educational use only.
The Revolutionists is a dark comedy set during the French Revolution, it follows four female revolutionists, Olympe de Gouges, Marie Antoinette, Charlotte Corday, & Marianne Angelle during the political turmoil. As the ticking time bomb of the revolution counts down, the play balances interpersonal drama and violence as the world crumbles around the women. This is a play written by Lauren Gunderson.

Overall Concept
I want the play to feel like a countdown. The audience should feel the tension as we transition between an exaggerated comedy and a deadly drama. The heart of the story lives in the executions and in the legacy of the women, in these moments we can connect it the most with our present day. During the execution scenes and the scenes where the revolution is building, I want the set to become an abstraction of Paris, focused on concrete, steel, and rough textures. With the intent of connecting the 1790s in Paris to modern-day Paris, specifically the projects. I want the set to remind the audience of both the past and the present of Paris, illustrating how the choices and decisions we make now, impact the future establishment.
Set Concept
I imagine there being three key design styles throughout the different sets. The interior of Olympe’s study will feel ornate, Parisian, and closer to a historical recreation of her home. This is where she lives, and because this is her story, it is arguably the most faithful to history (This also applies to her costume). When she starts thinking about the other women and telling their stories, that is when we see the exaggeration of the set, Paris, like the women, is almost a caricature of itself. Then, once the true nature of each of the women is revealed, specifically during their executions, that is when we reveal the past, present, and future of Paris.
